Georgia’s Own 90: Monica Pearson

In honor of our 90th anniversary, we’re recognizing 90 Georgians who have made their mark on our incredible state. Today, we honor Monica Pearson, former anchor at WSB-TV and two-time cancer survivor on National Mammography Day.

National Mammography Day reminds us of the importance of screenings. Pearson was diagnosed with ductal carcinoma in situ at age 50 in 1997 during a routine mammogram—no one in her family had been diagnosed with breast cancer. Many people don’t get scanned because of fear. “How often I’ve heard women and men say, ‘I’m not getting checked because they might find something,’ They forget early detection means an early cure. Routine exams can be a lifesaver,” Pearson says.
